Can't Buy Me Love

I love the Beatles!  Here's a little background music for your read today.

A couple of Sunday evenings ago, Tim and I had the chance to speak at our annual church conference about the college ministry.  We got to explain what has been going on in our group to the faithful few who will still attend a Sunday evening service, and all the staff (pretty sure it's required for them.)  They had a few people give testimonies about some of the life change that has been going on in our church.  I shared about the ways the Lord has been working through me quitting my job.  When the service was over, our pastor kind of made a big deal about me quitting my job... told me he was proud of me.  Then he said, "I leaned over to the guy next to me and said, 'I wonder how they are making it?!'"  My quick response was, "We don't have kids yet."  And we both agreed that made a difference.  But then I started thinking about his question and my answer.  It's not just the kid factor... we work hard at this!  The truth is, we really have changed very little financially since I quit my job.  So Pastor Gary, here's how we do it:

1.  We have a budget.
Before we married, Tim and I decided that when we have kids I will stay home with them.  Therefore, we chose to live off one income from the beginning, even though we had two for a while.  It took us a while to get it all balanced out, but we've been living off Tim's income since a few months after we got married.  We also discuss the budget often to make sure we are both on the same page.

2.  We save.
Part of our budget is savings.  We have multiple categories- retirement, new car, house repairs, car repairs, travel (my personal fave!), adoption (a close second).  We even have a sami fund... you know, for times when we can be good samaritans.

3.  We use Craig's List.
That's where we got our refrigerator, washer and dryer, and dining table.  Sure these things have been used before, but they work and the price is right.  These things are super expensive new, and we don't have that kind of money to spend all at once.  And we hate debt, so no payment plans for us, thanks.

4.  I buy most groceries at Wal-Mart.
I said it.  I know some people despise the above mentioned place, but let's face it, they are cheapest.  I do price matching from the circulars which also helps me get the best price.  I get certain items elsewhere, but the bulk of it comes from Wally World.  I do try not to look like the infamous emails floating around, though.

5.  We tithe.
Maybe I should have put that earlier in the list.  But the truth is, I just now thought of it.  I have tithed all my life, so I have the luxury of saying that it's really natural for me and I've always based spending money off 10% less than what was in my paycheck.  I say it's a luxury because I know this is not the case for everyone.  Tim learned this much later in life than I did, but we are both committed to it now.  It is something worth striving for, so if you don't do it yet, take heart!  You can!  Giving to God right away makes it easier to remember where the money came from in the first place, no matter the amount.

6.  We drive old cars.
Not long after we got married we were in a wreck.  No one was hurt, but my poor little B.B. didn't make it.  So we became a one car family.  Not the most favorable, I realize, but we made it work. (The Hubs absolutely loved the extra time he got to spend with me!)  Thanks to the money we got from the total and our new car savings, we were able to pay cash for a $6000 Corolla complete with man-power locks and windows, three cup holders, and a tape deck.  She is the perfect companion to Tim's 2000 Danger Ranger.

7.  We have dumb phones.
This is part budget choice, part life style choice.  While I know smart phones are really cool and super convenient, they can also be tricky.  For example, have you ever seen a family out to dinner, all with phones out and no conversation happening?  Or what about those college boys at church who must have that phone to read the Bible but can also look at porn on the same device?  Or there's me, who simply gets really distracted by technology and can waste a lot of time with something that cool.  Plus, they are expensive.

8.  We don't buy clothes often.
We budget a little for clothes each month, but don't buy that often.  That way, the money collects and we are able to purchase nicer or more things when we do go shopping.  We definitely take advantage of sales and discount stores.  Shopping can be a slippery slope of wants vs. needs.  One thing that helps me is to not buy right away.  If I'm still thinking about an item a couple of days after seeing it, chances are it will be a solid purchase, not just something I buy then never wear.

9.  We find joy in giving.
We both really like to be generous.  In our budget we have monthly money designated for spending on other people and missions.  It can be challenging to look for ways to spend that money, but we feel confident that we are following after the heart of God when we think this way.  Sometimes people need to be blessed before they can really see the Lord.  We also have four World Vision kids.  It's kind of a your's, mine, and ours situation, but it works.

10.  We eat at home.
It's healthier.  It's cheaper.  It allows us to spend more time together.  All three things I would vote are good for marriage and life!  We usually save eating out for when we are with other people.

11.  We are creative.
We go on dates to parks, free concerts, matinee movies, and fancy restaurants using gift cards Tim gets at work.  We use discount websites to book hotels.  We make up our own Crossfit workouts, although our neighbors probably think we are crazy.

12.  We try to do-it-ourselves.
Our house has needed a lot of work, but with the exception of an electrician, plumber, and a couple of professional cleaners, we have done the work.  We have been taught by the amazing Captain Ken and helped a ton by family and friends, but we have put in the labor.

13.  We make changes.
If changes need to be made to the budget or spending, we talk about them and make them.  We have made lots of changes.  That has helped us figure out that this finance thing is always going to be a work in progress.

14.  We are blessed.
Neither of us had college debt or car payments when we got married.  I understand this is the exception to the rule and do not take it for granted.  We also have an amazing story of how we were able to buy our house, which we know isn't normal either.  (Let me clarify... we do have a mortgage.)  But this does not mean that we have a free pass to go crazy with our money and build up some debt.

I hope this has not come across as us thinking that we have this all figured out.  We don't.  I do hope maybe it could be an encouragement for someone else, though.  It's probably pretty obvious that our finances reflect our lifestyle and I hope that will always be the case.  Living simply allows us to keep track of what is truly important in life rather than trying to "keep up with the Joneses."  We like the Caves a lot!

Whew!  Well congratulations if you made it this far!  I am certain that your circumstances are different than ours, but perhaps we have offered some encouragement.  Do you have thoughts?  Questions?  Suggestions?  We would love to hear them!

Glad you were curious enough to read.

Is Your Refrigerator Running?

You know the old prank call gag where you dial a number and ask someone, "Is your refrigerator running?" And when they answer, "Yes," you cleverly say, "Well go catch it," and proceed to hang up the phone?  Well, if someone tried to prank me right now, my answer would be, "Yes!  It's even running in my kitchen!"  Ever since we moved in to the house our refrigerator has been (running) in the garage.  But while I was away this past weekend, The Hubs surprised me by moving it in!  Hooray for the recipient of 1,738 husband points!

I'm A Lame Friend

Today I stalked one of my best friends on Facebook.  The problem with this is that I found myself trying to catch up with what's been going on in her life there because, unfortunately, I have done a terrible job of keeping up with her in real life.

We have been friends since high school and have stuck together through attending different colleges, getting married, getting jobs, and so much of life that, since high school, has been shared long distance. We used to sing together, jam out to this song, and even got to work at summer camp together once upon a time.

These days she is an amazing 2nd grade teacher, a super cool wife, and a lay leader in her church.  I'm so proud of how she works to help the church function like it should.  And I'm completely impressed by her tech savvy and creativity!  Plus, she's just plain fun to be around.  I miss you, Lisa... sorry I've been a lame friend lately.

On a completely unrelated note, I have recently discovered the excitement of socked feet on hardwood floors.  They are SO slippery.  Let me tell you, socks make it really difficult to run from a husband chasing you through the house!  There is a cold front coming in this weekend and I can't wait to report which one of us busts it first.

Some Day

Let's face it.  I have not really been consistent in writing on the blog.  I said in my first post that I wanted to write a married people blog.  I have done a poor job of that.  All of our house repairs and escapades seem to have taken over everything.  I didn't intend for this blog to only be about the house, so I plan to try to be better at sharing more of us.

As such, I want to tell a little about how I'm spending my time now.  In my second post I gave some background about who we are and what we do.  I said I would be filling you in on what I'm doing with my time now that I quit my job.  Better late than never, right?

When I quit my job, I figured I would take the summer off and figure out how I would spend my time in the fall.  This was not to be so.  The Lord had plans for me that I knew little of.  One of those plans was for me to begin leading worship for a women's Bible study on Thursday mornings.  The cool part about this is that I had actually told The Hubs I wanted to get better at guitar so maybe I could lead worship "some day."  My some day came much sooner than I thought!  So, armed with plenty of knowledge and little skill, I began leading these precious women every week.  It has been amazing!  Truly one of the highlights of my week.

The reason I tell you this today is because of a text I received yesterday.  One of the ladies who teaches the Bible study asked for a specific song... the same song I had heard the night before and wanted to sing on Thursday.  I can just hear BB say, "Isn't that just like our God?!"

Wait... Do You Have Your Keys?!

A typical Saturday morning for us involves yard work.  But on this particular Saturday, things did not go as planned.  Please enjoy this reenactment.  And yes, by reenactment that means we did the whole thing a second time for pictures.

Sarah: "Hey Tim, do we really need to mow today?  The grass doesn't look that bad.  Maybe we could just do the edges and call it good."
Tim: "I think you're right.  Want to go for a walk instead?"

(After making a quick dash under the closing garage door) Tim: "Wait... do you have your keys?!"
Sarah: "Oh my gosh, NO!"

Tim: "Haha!  Just kidding, mine are in my pocket.  Hehehe!"
Sarah: (The look)

Tim: "Come on.  Let's go walk."
(Commence walk around the block)

(After arriving home) Tim: "Uh...these are my car keys, not my house keys."
Sarah: "Bahahaha! So what do we do?  Is the bathroom window still open?"
Tim: "Yes.  Or we could try the doggie door in the back."
Sarah: "We have locks on our gates... can't get into the back."
Tim: "Good thing the window is open!" (Audience can imagine why said window is open)
Sarah: "Let's use the keys to pry off the screen."

Sarah: "So how do we do this?  Who's going in?  Do you want a boost?"
Tim: "I've done a few pull ups in my day, I will be fine."

 Tim: "Okay, you try."

 Sarah: "Hahahahaha!"

Sarah: "Um... what do I do now?  I can't reach the floor.  Do I just go head first?!"
Tim:  See if you can get a little further in, then pull one leg through to stand on the toilet."

 Sarah: "Got it!"

Tim: "Will you come let me in?"
(End scene)

Aren't you glad you were curious enough to read?!  :)

Making A House A Home

Our house has really started to feel like home, which is a wonderful thing!  We've added several personal touches and I figure it's time for a Pinterest edition of the blog.  For those of you who don't know, Pinterest is a website that allows me to take other people's clever ideas and replicate them at my house.  It has helped immensely with decorating our new home.  I have been able to incorporate things that have meaning, are functional, and look good!  So, not much to say, but lots to show this time around.

One of the first things we did after semi-finishing the kitchen floor was have an Olympic party, of course!  We celebrated the opening ceremonies with some of our married friends- each couple got to choose a country to represent. Can you tell where we were "from"?
If you have been in my home in the last three years, no matter where I was living at the time, you have probably seen these frames.  I found them at an antique store and bought them for a dollar a piece.  They were empty.  And for quite some time, remained empty on my wall.  I received much grief over this.   But I finally decided what to do with them.  I put burlap on the back and a clothespin on the burlap.  This way, I can easily change out what is in the frame.  This was  what decorated the wall throughout the Olympics.
First Pinterest project- card board letter from Hobby Lobby, drew design on with pencil, then made design with hot glue and painted.  Ta da!
Obviously, my projects do not go off without a hitch.  This next project was really simple, but in the process I splatter painted my dining table, and yes, that's my computer up in the top left corner.  Oh dear.

This is the date night jar I made during the splatter paint episode above.  Another Pinterest idea... the jar, not the splatter paint.  The stick are color coded with dates based on money, planning required, and where.  It is a fun way for us to be spontaneous, which I love!
This was actually a gift.  Tim's best man, Max, currently lives in Abu Dhabi and got to come home for a visit over the summer.  He brought us this impressive sand are that we now proudly display in the living room.  It also helps me remember to pray for them while they are so far from us.
Thank you, Pinterest!  I had been trying to figure out what to do with my mess of jewelry and finally saw this beauty.  The best part about this project was that it was so simple I started and finished in the same day!  Plus, we have a fun owl friend in our bedroom now.  :)
We got a grill!  Tim's parents passed their grill down to us.  This happened several weeks ago, but we just recently used it for the first time.  Naturally, I'm taking the picture through the blinds to avoid West Nile.  It's no joke around here and the mosquitos love me, but always leave Tim alone.
I got brave because I wanted a better picture.  This was actually Tim's first time as grill master.  I'm happy to report that he has quite a future ahead of him.  Dinner was great!
The current use of our frames in the living room.  I took down the British flags and now we have this lovely display.
This was our first official housewarming gift.  It was a bit of a joke from one of my coworkers, but how could I not hang that up in my kitchen?!
We still have a long way to go, but it's nice to call this place ours now.  Glad you were curious enough to read.

America is Not a Melting Pot, It's a Salad Bowl

It's funny how after I have been blogging for a while, I start to think in blogs.  What I mean is that as things take place in my life, sometimes I instantly think about what I will write in a blog about it.  Because of this, and because it has been far too long since my last blog, I have been walking around with something like three different blog topics in my head.  Hopefully this first one will help explain why it's taken me so long to get them out of my head.

On August 9th we got a new roommate.  One of our college students from church came to stay with us for a little while.  Not only is she a college student, she is an international college student.  She is from China and got to go home to spend the summer with her family.  Due to circumstances out of her control and ours, before she returned she ended up losing her housing here in the states and we ended up with all of her things in our garage.  Not only that, but she was supposed to come back on the 8th. Remember those giant typhoons that went through Shanghai that caused over 200,000 people to evacuate?  Yeah, that slowed her down a bit.  So, when she arrived on the 9th, she came to our house to stay with us until she could find suitable living arrangements.

On the 10th I had my wisdom tooth removed, which wasn't really that big of a deal except for the fact that the anesthesia made me sick for a week.  Not throw up sick, but more of an "I'm so dizzy I can't get off the couch or I might fall over" kind of sick.  So, with a new roommate and the traumatic loss of my tooth, I was a little preoccupied for a while.

Shidi (our new roomie) must have looked at two or three houses a day that she found on Craig's list.  When she finally found the one she wanted to move in to, we celebrated with ice cream cake!  Shidi loves ice cream.  We love ice cream.  So it was a win-win situation.  Shidi loves sweets, possibly more than me- which is saying something for those of you who know me- and she informed us that girls have two stomachs.  One is for food, but the other is for sweets.  That's why we always have room for dessert!  She also told us one night that she had always heard that America was a melting pot.  But once she lived here she disagreed and said it's actually a salad bowl because we are all thrown in and tossed together, but we all keep our uniqueness.  Shidi was so fun and brought much laughter and joy into our home.

She loved to help me in the kitchen and learn about how we do things.  One day she offered to cook us Chinese food, but insisted that her cooking would not be very good.  She was so nervous!  I assured her that I had certainly messed up dinner before and if it was completely inedible we would go out for dinner.  Well, let me just tell you that she can cook!  We had two wonderful meals while she was here.  It was so fun to see her try new things and have success.  Plus, we got to eat some great food.  She told us her parents didn't believe that she cooked, but we were sure to tell them how well she did when we met them on Skype last night.  :)

Yesterday was the 1st of the month, so Shidi's rent began at her new place.  Tim and I were not at home, so we helped her move today.  She was sad to go, and truth be told, we were sad also.  I told Tim it felt like we were dropping off and leaving our child at college for the first time.  Some people, okay most people, thought we were a little crazy for getting a roommate.  But we never doubted that God has given us this house to glorify Him and since we have experienced His love and blessing, we need to love and bless others in return.  There was a need and we were just available.

Shidi got us some flowers and we all love ice cream cake!
Shidi's first attempt at opening bread in a can.  I have never seen this happen before.
Shidi and Katie helped with the dinner assembly line.
Now it's Shidi's turn- hard at work making dinner!
Lots of prep
This is Shidi's favorite seasoning that she brought back from China.  Thankfully,
she can read the Chinese directions because the English ones don't translate too well.
This was my favorite!
I named this dish "Chinese Tacos"
We are professional chopstickers!
Mmmmm!
Dinner #2 = lots of left overs.  Hooray!
